Tipped employees
Employers in Massachusetts can pay tipped employees a cash wage of $6.75 an hour, taking a tip credit of up to $8.25, as long as tips bring the employee to at least $15.00 for every hour worked. If they don't, the employer makes up the difference. An employee counts as tipped if they get more than $20 a month in tips.
Exceptions and details
- For tipped employees the employer must calculate any make-up pay at the end of each shift (M.G.L. c. 151, § 7).
- The $15.00 rate and $6.75 tipped cash wage took effect January 1, 2023 (Acts of 2018, chapter 121, §§ 21, 26, 36).
